The Paynes Mill Quick Step
When my friend Barbara Payne told me she used to help her engineer father make a workshop gadget of his invention called the Quickstep Mill, I said I thought it sounded like the name of a tune, which needed to be written. The original name - The Quickstep Mill Quick Step - seemed too much of a mouthful and so it became the Paynes Mill Quick Step. The lack of an apostrophe in the title is deliberate, in a vaguely Joycean way.
